Chocolate Cake
- 1 Box Chocolate Cake Mix or use this chocolate cake recipe from scratch!!
- 1 ¼ Cup Milk
- 3 Large Eggs
- 1/3 Cup Salted Melted Butter + 2 tbps
Chocolate Frosting
- 2/3 Cup Melted Salted Butter
- 3/4 Cup Melted Chocolate Chips
- 4 Cups Sifted Powdered Sugar
- 1/4 Cup Sifted Cocoa Powder
- 1/2 Tbsp Milk Powder (optional)
- A Few Tsps Milk
For Decorating
- Extra Milk for the cake soak
- 1/2-3/4 Cup Chocolate Chips
Step-by-Step Instructions
Chocolate Cake
- Preheat your oven to the temperature stated on your box cake mix1 Box Chocolate Cake Mix
- Prepare and mix your cake batter according to the box’s instructions until you reach a smooth batter consistency (I use milk instead of water and butter instead of oil for a better flavour)
- Grease and line two 8 inch cake pan with greaseproof paper
- Evenly divide your batter between the two cake pans
- Bake your cakes in the oven, according to your box cake’s instructions
Chocolate Frosting
- Begin by melting together the chocolate and butter until smooth
- Add in your sifted powdered sugar, cocoa powder and milk powder
- Mix until your achieve a smooth and silky frosting texture
- If you buttercream is too dry, add a few tsps of milk or if it is too liquid add a but more powdered sugar and whip it up
- Set your buttercream aside while your cakes bake
Decorating the Cake
- After your cakes have cooled completely, start by levelling your cakes and cutting them in half, leaving you with overall 4 cake layers
- Then spread a small amount of chocolate frosting onto your turntable of cake plate
- Place your first cake layer on top
- Using a rubber spatula, spread some milk or cake soak over your cake to keep it moist
- Then spread a small amount of chocolate frosting on top
- Next, add your second cake layer
- Repeat this process until you have no more cake layers remaining
- With the final cake layer be sure to flip it upside down to ensure a flat top for your cake
- Spread a bit more cake soak onto the top layer of cake, followed by a large dollop of chocolate frosting
- Frost your cake by using a metal spatula to smooth out the top and sides
- After your cake is mostly smooth, place it in the fridge for around 20 mins or until the buttercream is firm and no longer sticks to your finger
- Once the cake has chilled, grab a piping bag that is fitted with a large star tip and pipe all around the top of the cake (see the video below for more details)
- Next, place a handful of chocolate chips into your hand and then press them against the edge of the cake (all around the sides up until the frosting decorations on the top)
- Fill in any gaps after doing this by hand placing chocolate chips into areas of exposed frosting on the sides of the cake
- Slice up your cake and enjoy your very own Linda’s Chocolate Fudge Cake
