Over the years, flapjacks have become a staple snack in British households. They are a popular choice for picnics, lunchboxes, and afternoon tea. The simplicity of the recipe and the fact that it requires only a few ingredients, which are readily available in most kitchens, makes flapjack a favourite among home bakers.
Substitutions for the Recipe
- Salted Butter- my reason for using salted butter in this recipe is because of how well the salt balances out the strong, sweet flavours of the brown sugar and golden syrup (if you don’t have salted butter, use unsalted and add a 1/2 tsp salt to your batter)
- Brown Sugar- the only other sugar that I would recommend for this recipe is demerara sugar which is a very course, crunchy brown sugar
- Golden syrup- I’m aware that a lot of Americans will find it hard to find golden syrup in your local supermarket so my best recommendation for a substitute would be maple syrup, corn syrup or molasses as they all have a similar caramelly, sugar flavour, reminiscent of golden syrup
- Rolled Oats- I mean the whole idea of a flapjack recipe is the oats but if you don’t like oats, I guess you could also use rice crispies, cornflakes or even crushed up cookies
